About us
About us
The Hoewa’a Dallas Outrigger Canoe Club was formed on June 28th, 2004 by Aaron Olds and a few friends.
Aaron had a vision of bringing Hawaiian outrigger canoeing to North Texas and needed a little help getting the club on it’s feet. After getting 6-7 people together to help form the club, Aaron set off to California to pick what would become the clubs first canoe. (The “Hoku”)
The club’s vision is to bring the sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoe racing to North Texas, to provide a positive, family friendly environment, to promote the Hawaiian traditions and to spread a little Aloha.
Hoewa’a Outrigger Canoe Club is an amateur, non-profit organization that competes against other canoe clubs throughout Texas, North America, Hawaii and anywhere else the currents take us. We paddle in Six-man canoes ranging from 3 minute sprints to 5 hour, 36 mile competitions.
Hoewa’a Outrigger Canoe Club is comprised of adventure minded adults of various ages who enjoy the competition, along with a sense of Ohana and Aloha achieved through the ancient sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoeing. We are dedicated to preserving and promoting the environment.
We are based in Garland, TX and we welcomes adventure minded adults and youth, with or without prior paddling experience. (For practice days and times please see our calendar)
We accommodate all levels of competition and commitment. Those with no paddling experience, known in the paddling community as “novice”, are provided instruction and compete in shorter races. You are welcome to join us at any time throughout the season.
Hoewa’a also welcomes paddlers from other clubs visiting the Dallas area to come out and join us for practice. Just contact one of our coaches and we’ll have a spot in the canoe for you.

** Lower your dues! Bring in those Corporate crews and get a discount on your membership dues! For each paid Corporate Challenge crew you bring in, we will take off $5 from your membership dues. (Up to $20.00)
Additional cost:
Racing jerseys - All Hoewa’a paddlers are required to paddle (race), in Hoewa’a approved racing jersey. We currently use Under Armour brand for our jerseys, which cost in between $20.00 - $30.00 depending on which style you choose. (sleeveless, short sleeve or long sleeve)
Other recommended equipment:
The club has a very limited supply of paddles which is one reason why we recommend (if you like the sport and join the club); members purchase their own paddle. Having your own paddle not only assures you will have the right equipment at practice and races, but it also gives you a since of ownership and motivation. You can go to our “links” page for a good selection of companies the make quality paddles.
We also recommend board shorts or neoprene type shorts. Long cotton type material shorts will weigh you and the canoe down, so thin quick drying materials are recommend. We also recommend paddling gloves and water shoes, a good size water bottle and energy snacks for practice. Returning members are expected to use their own paddle/equipment after a certain length of time.
All of the listed items above can be found at various stores listed under “gear” on our links page.
*Club fees are subject to change between racing seasons and various cost may arise during the year.
